OUR HISTORY
We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord trusting in His Holy Word, he’s never failed us yet. Can’t turn around now, we’ve come this far by faith.
The history of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church is a journey of faith, starting in the 4th Sunday of 1896 when Deacon George Lecator, George Shields, George Annis, and his wife Emma organized the church at Bacon Hill. They purchased land and built a simple church with wooden walls and tree seats. Reverend Charles J. Henry from Snow Hill, Maryland, became the first pastor, and the church served the community for 31 years.
In 1928, Reverend A.D. Weaver took over as pastor and renovated the church with stained glass windows, plastered walls, a new pulpit, and a steeple with a brass bell. The church was then known as New Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
In 1945, Reverend D.E. Hardy from Smithfield, Virginia, became the pastor, and during his 45-year tenure, many improvements were made, including new light fixtures and a central air heating system.
After Reverend Hardy, prayers were answered when Reverend Jeffery L. Smith from Cheriton, Virginia, became pastor in December 1991. Pastor Smith has been with us for 33 years, leading spiritual and physical growth. We added a baptismal pool, pew cushions, a sound system, hymnal racks, and more. God granted Pastor Smith a vision, which was realized in June 2002 when the church underwent a renovation, including the addition of new classrooms, a finance room, a choir room, an expanded annex, and various other improvements. In 2010, Pastor Smith became the moderator of the Eastern Shore Virginia & Maryland Baptist Association. We have also hosted the Annual Session of the Eastern Shore Virginia & Maryland Baptist Association in 2014, 2018, & 2024.
We've been blessed with five children (the late Reverend Ambrose Sample, the late Reverend Joseph Clifford, Reverend Ricardo Poulson (now Pastor at New Metompkin Baptist Church in Parksley, Virginia), Minister Julian Mercer and Minister Monte Mercer) entering the ministry, and our progress, though sometimes small, is guided by our faith in Christ.
We remain committed to the high calling in Jesus Christ, believing that the best is yet to come. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we continue to be a church that serves God, where everyone is valued, and Christ is our focus. Glory be to God for all He has done.
