OUR PASTOR

If ye know that He [the Father] is Righteous, ye know that every one that doeth Righteousness is born of Him (1 John 2:29)

In response to a divine calling to preach, Pastor Smith was licensed to the ministry on May 22, 1977, by the African Baptist Church in Cheriton, Virginia, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Charles Francis Mapp. Since November 1991, Pastor Smith has faithfully served as the Pastor of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Exmore, Virginia. Under his leadership, the church has experienced significant growth, both in membership and ministry offerings. New ministries established under his tenure include the New Member’s Ministry, Media Ministry, Angels of Mercy Ministry, Male Choir, Youth Choir, Combined Choir, Jeremiah 29:11 Ensemble, and the Jeffery L. Smith Gospel Choir. Additionally, a weekly Bible Study Ministry, a Drug Ministry, and the Claudine Riley-Smith Scholarship Fund have been instituted, the latter providing financial support for students pursuing post-secondary education. In addition to his pastoral duties, Pastor Smith has served as the Moderator of the Eastern Shore Virginia & Maryland Baptist Association from 2010-2014.

Pastor Smith has also overseen the renovation of the entire church building, ensuring that New Mount Calvary Baptist Church remains a vibrant place of worship. He attributes the church's growth and success to God's blessings, and the congregation consistently expresses their gratitude by proclaiming, "To God Be the Glory for Great Things He Hath Done."

Pastor Smith’s theological vision is rooted in moving beyond divisive issues related to power and control, advocating for unity within the church through a focus on "Holiness of Heart and Life." His emphasis is not on rigid creedal formulations but on fostering personal and corporate sanctity that reflects a genuine commitment to living a holy life.

He is married to Claudine Riley of Cape Charles, and together they are the proud parents of two sons, Jeffery Smith, Jr., and Justin Riley-Smith.
